Kids’ Airplane Etiquette

Chad and I recently took our two youngest kids on their first airplane ride. I chatted up the flight attendant and asked her advice on kids’ airplane etiquette. Here are a few manners and tips to remember when flying with children:

Say Yes

I took dinner to my BIL & SIL’s family Monday night. She was due with baby #4 any day, her hubby was way sick, and her son broke his arm the night before. When I called her to see if I could bring dinner, she said, “I would normally say no, but yes, I would love for you to bring us dinner.”

Earn Movie Time

My self-titled “Education Nerd” friend, Lisa, commented on one of my travel posts and gave me this idea for road trips. She had her kids earn movies, treats, games, etc. by doing educational worksheets worth points. I gathered she has an elaborate folder/point/worksheet system where she allots different points for different things. I decided to try a modified, simpler version of this idea and tested it out on a shorter 4 hour trip.

Manner #19: You Get What You Get

My husband fixed a nice breakfast for the kids before school one morning (I had a dentist appt). I was impressed that he made scrambled eggs and toast plus he had set the table. He called us down, and as we were eating my little girl said in a nasty tone, “Dad? Where’s the drink? You should have made orange juice!” Then my son chimed in: “Yeah! or chocolate milk?”

Nothing Like Me

My daughter threw a fit yesterday morning before school because she didn’t want to go. It was field day and apparently she hates field day! What? I lived for field day. I still remember practicing hand-offs at recess for the 4×100 relay. How can the offspring of a State Champion track star (hubby) and a College co-ed intramural badminton champion (me) hate field day?
