At least once a week, I think, “Who am I to think that I could do a blog? and that anyone would want to read it?” (That is probably the day I skip a post.) And at least once a month I verbalize my insecurity to my husband. I close my computer and consider bagging the whole project.
Then my husband knows just what to say. He doesn’t praise me or give me a bunch of gooshy compliments- that’s not my style or what I need. He doesn’t put down other blogs or other women to try to make me feel better about myself. That’s too weak. He just simply says: “Who are you NOT to be?”
He knows my favorite quote and he knows how to knock me out of my shrinking mode:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” (Marianne Williamson)
This quote is great on so many levels (and I guarantee you will see it again in a future post).
So for now I will keep blogging (until I meltdown again next month)… And if you ever think “Who am I to start a business, sit on a PTA committee, speak in front of hundreds of people, run a relay, teach a church lesson?” or even just “Who am I to be a mom?” just remember “Who are you NOT to be?”
