Leap Day

As I was looking at the calendar, it hit me that Leap Day was coming up soon!  (2 days to be exact!) Since Leap Day comes only once  every 4 years I thought it would be fun to celebrate it somehow.  But how???

I don’t know exactly what I will do that day yet, but here are a few ideas that came to mind.  Maybe you’ll find some inspiration too.

FROG FOODS

You could play off the “Leap” idea and make this frog apple from Family Fun for after-school snack:

or you could have the kids help make frog cupcakes.

FROG GAMES

You could make the origami paper frogs that jump or play leap frog.  If you like the frog twist on Leap Day, here are more fun frog games and craft ideas.

I, however, am thinking more about playing off the rareness of the day- how it only comes around every 4 years.

LETTER

I  like the idea of  the kids writing a letter to their future selves that they would open up on Leap Day 2016. But since my kids are little, I think they would just stare at the blank piece of paper.  So I would have to guide their thinking with questions or writing prompts such as

My best friend…

My favorite TV show…

My favorite food…

What I like to do…

My address…

What I want to be when I grow up…

Favorite shoes/shirt…

Or the kids could draw a picture of what they think they will look like in 4 years.

TIME CAPSULE

You could take the future idea further and put together a time capsule that you open up on Leap Day 2016.  The capsule could be a shoe box, gift bag, decorative paint pail, glass jar, or a covered Pringles or oatmeal container.

The kids could put in a favorite item, school work, a memory, a picture, a ticket stub, writing sample, etc.  You could stick the kids letters or drawings in the time capsule too.

I hope I can pull off the letter/time capsule idea.  In 4 years, I think the kids will get a kick out of  reading the notes and opening the time capsule. I will store it  in my Valentine’s holiday bin so I won’t forget where I put it.

If you have any more ideas, let me know. Happy Leap Day!
