April Fools’ Day Ideas

April Fools’ Day isn’t even on my radar until I wake up that day and try to throw something together. It is not my favorite holiday and I don’t like pranks, but this year my kids have been reminiscing about what I did last year. I wrote “No School Today!” on our family message chalkboard. It was the first thing they saw when they came down the stairs. (I kind of felt bad when they realized it was a joke.) Elle switched cereal bags and boxes to trick Crew and I made faux fried eggs for breakfast using Cool Whip and peaches. They fooled no one, but we all had a good time and a good breakfast. The giggles and sparkly eyes, as they’ve remembered last year, are motivation for me to come up with something for this year.

I plan to repeat the faux fried eggs idea because they loved it so much and they actually ate it. I found this variation to the faux fried eggs idea with a recipe and a cute picture at Delish.com.

I also plan to extend the foolin’ to lunchtime. Elle has been begging me to take a home lunch recently, so I am going to surprise her on Friday with her first sack lunch from home with this Gag Lunch idea from Family Fun.

For dinner, I’ve seen meatloaf cupcakes all over the web where you make your meatloaf recipe in a muffin tin and pipe mashed potatoes on top. You can garnish with carrots, chives, or colored salt. Unfork had a cute picture and a fancy meatloaf (anything besides just hamburger is fancy to me) recipe posted.

Family Fun also had a slightly different version of the meatloaf cupcakes, but I think I like the swirly white frosting tops better.

On second thought, I may keep the meatloaf cupcake idea up my sleeve for next year. They were happy with hardly anything last year so they will be happy with just breakfast and lunch pranks. The more I do this year the more they I will expect next year. Gotta give myself some room to grow.

Happy April Fools’ Day! What tricks do you have up your sleeve?

  1. Love all these ideas Tiff! Seriously, I think I might try to do this egg idea for Tommy. He might throw it at me though… So I might just try to switch the cereal like Elle!
