My Word

It’s November! and I have been pondering over my word for 2014 for about the last month … usually during yoga class.

I know January is still 2 months away, but it takes me that long to find the best word for me for the upcoming year.

I put a lot of thought in to this decision because, for me, the word is my way of improving myself.  It is my way of finding my weaknesses and making them strong.  It is my way of having a purpose, a focus and a progression for the year.  My word is my version of New Year’s Resolutions.

For the first time, I am even fasting and praying over my word.  This may sound really weird, but fasting and praying is my way of asking God for help in my life.  He knows what word I most need to work on; what word would be for my best good, for my overall improvement.  He knows my limitations and my strengths; he knows me.

And I think God cares.  Not just because I care, but because He wants me to be my best self.

In the past I have always seen action items and categories associated with my other words.  I could easily think of what I needed to do to help focus on my word for the year.

2011- Strength

2013- Health

But this year my words are more vague or theoretical or emotional.  I don’t see what to do with them; I only see a final outcome — a desired change of heart.

Here are some words that I have been considering:

Soft

Open

Abundance

Forgiveness

Letting Go

Enough

Charity

Joy

Feast

Full

Heart

That may seem like random words, but each one means something to me.  They could all tie together really.

I am as excited as you (note sarcasm) to find out which word I go with.  Knowing me, it might not even be a word on this list.  I will have to see in what way I am inspired.

And I am excited to figure out a way to take these words out of the clouds and plant them on the ground.  I can’t just ponder on a word for a year.  I will need to do something… I will need to act.  I will need to make change.

Is anybody else already thinking about their goals for 2014?

  1. Great idea. Love the words too! I personally like charity because we live in a society that is so “me” centered. You’re awesome!

  2. I love your blog it has been a blessing in my life for about a year now. I do a word every year also and my word this next year is going to be steadfast. Good luck figuring yours out. Can’t wait to see what it is.

    1. Thanks, Cindy! These kind of comments keep me going. And I am glad I am not the only one that is already thinking about next year’s goals. I love your word. I am curious what you do with it? Do you just think about it all year or do you have an action plan? Just wondering how I should make my goals more concrete. Thank you!

  3. well I just found out we will be moving to another state right at Christmas time…grrr (2nd move in 6 months…special kind of torture I think) for my husband’s job. I think my word is “eye” as in the eye of the storm. I have to be that for my family right now instead of being caught up in the storm!
