It’s the Journey, not the Destination

We have all heard, “It’s the journey, not the destination that counts” but how many of us actually believe it, especially when traveling?  We get in the car and want to get where we are going as fast as we can.

Well, I decided to take the scenic route on a recent trip with my kids to Zion’s National Park.   On the drive down, we stopped off at Cove Fort Historic Site that we have passed many times.  It is an old fort that was built as a safe stop for travelers.

Cove Fort was a great place to stretch our legs, take a potty break, and learn about life in the olden days.

In addition to the guided tour, the kids had fun exploring the fort with cousins.

Once we arrived at Zion’s National Park our itinerary involved lots of hiking.  One hike in particular my daughter was extra tired so we took our time.  She found a stick that kept her mind occupied as she traced paths in the sand for grandpa to follow.  Grandpa was a good sport to weave, twist, turn, and even do complete circles as he followed her lines in the sand.  When I’d start to get frustrated with our lack of progress,  I had to remind myself she was enjoying the journey and that is what hiking is about.

After a fun weekend with family, we went 15 minutes off course on the way home to take a scenic drive through Kolob Canyon.  Look what we would have missed if we had stayed on the interstate:

Next time you are on a road trip, stop at the scenic byways, historical sites, or small towns that you usually pass right on by. You might just enjoy the journey more than the destination.
