Deliberate Motherhood Book Review

One of the fun perks of being a blogger is you get to read great books and then review them for your audience.

I signed up to read the Power of Mom’s book called Deliberate Motherhood: 12 Powers of Peace, Purpose, Order and Joy because I love the word deliberate and how it can relate to motherhood.  To me deliberate motherhood means to mother with purpose and intention and thought — to mother with the end in mind — to do what is best for your family regardless of what everyone else is doing.  You might be the only one doing something, but you know exactly why you do it.  That is deliberate motherhood.

I was supposed to have my review up earlier this week. But in my attempts to read and review Deliberate Motherhood, guess what got in the way….

Motherhood.

Yes, that’s right.  Motherhood  wasn’t allowing me to read about motherhood.   The irony wasn’t lost on me.

Besides the regular life of a mother, September brought her own challenges. I took a trip to Boise to help a sister; I helped another sister with a niece’s wedding and Crew broke his finger.  An ER visit and 3 doctor’s appointments later he finally got a cast put on this week. Plus dance, football, soccer and homeschooling officially started.  Needless to say, there wasn’t much time to read.

When I finally carved out some time to sit down and read the book, unfortunately Locke got the flu the same day. He ended up laying on me as I read.  I learned it is hard to have your arm around someone, snuggled into you,  and turn pages at the same time. I was relating to the book in real time.

Motherhood. Oh, motherhood.

Eventually I finished the book, and I’m glad I did.

Deliberate Motherhood has 12 different chapters written by a variety of different mothers/writers.  They cover 12 different “powers” of motherhood:

Acceptance

Love

Patience

Individualilty

Intention

Progress

Balance

Priorities

Organization

Fun

Optimism

Moments

Chapters include vignettes, quotes, life lessons and personal stories from different women based on each chapter’s topic.  I appreciated the different authors’ writing styles, wisdom, perspective and learning experiences.  If you didn’t relate to one, you were sure to relate to several others.  I found the authors honest and candid as well as uplifting and encouraging.  I also really enjoyed the choice of topics.  I felt they were purposeful and helpful and covered a wide range of mother struggles.

Here is a preview of some of the great insights you can glean from the book:

I just wish I could of read this kind of stuff 11 years ago when I had my first baby.  I think I would have had much more peace, purpose, order and joy in my life and much less stress, disappointment and unfulfilled expectations.  When you know better, you do better, I guess.

I think the book is an uplifting, helpful read for any mom or mom to be.  It would make a great gift for a friend too. If you would like to buy this book you can purchase it here.

For anyone who purchases the book in September and sends their receipt (or an email acknowledging purchase) to [email protected], they’ll receive complimentary access to the Deliberate Mothering Podcast series (valued at $20). Also, on October 4th, 10 Grand Prize Winners will be selected to receive the Power of Moms Premium Package (valued at $224)! Happy reading to all you deliberate mothers out there!
