We could all use a little help when it comes to parenting. This section of the blog will include parenting tips, lessons, stories, ideas, dilemmas, and solutions. By sharing these tested tips, hopefully someone’s parenting life is a little easier.

Mom’s Meeting

It’s safe to say that Mom’s Meeting is my favorite part of our homeschooling day. We have it every morning about 10:30. The breakfast dishes are done; my bed is made; I am back from exercising. The kids have (theoretically) done their morning routine, daily responsibility, personal scripture study and any other school work they wanted to get a jump on. The kids have worked independently all morning and are ready for some mom time. We gather in the living room on the couch. We have an opening song and an opening prayer. This is considered our family prayer in the morning. Who says it has to be first thing? We go over the days calendar and expectations. I share what went well the d…

Small Change

As long as I can remember, I have had a shelf in my fridge labeled “Toppings”. Think ice cream. Hot chocolate. Pancakes. Kind of toppings. The shelf included whipped cream, chocolate syrup, caramel topping, vanilla creamer, syrup, jelly, and as of late, even some vanilla flavoring. It was my yummy shelf.…

6 Minimalism Tips

I would like to bear my testimony about minimalism. Our landlord called on June 8th and gave us 30 days to be out of our house. He sold the property, so I am in the middle of moving! It’s been a little stressful around here, but not as stressful as it could have been. Luckily, I have been decluttering, dejunking and de-owning ever since I found minimalism two years ago, so I simply have less to move.…

Finance Fridays

Chad and I have been sticking to a strict budget around here since last February. We budget to zero every month so we know where all of our money is going, and we use cash for many of our purchases. Budgeting has been a rewarding, challenging, learning journey. One tool that has helped me stay on top of the budget is Finance Fridays.…

Puzzle Love

My husband called me from his two week business trip in Hawaii and asked me what he should bring home to the kids as a gift. He suggested souvenirs like T-shirts or shell necklaces. My internal reaction was “Heck no! The last thing I want is another trinket at my house.” But instead I kindly suggested he bring home a puzzle instead.…

One Month, One Space

I really hope I get to move this year. But I told Chad I don’t want to move until I have gone through each space in my house. And by “gone through” I mean dejunk, declutter, and organize. Nothing makes me happier than taking a load to the donation center. I also love having space in my closets, drawers, and shelves. Minimalism is my drug of choice.…

Add On

I am writing about homeschooling…again.  Don’t shut down on me if you don’t homeschool. You may still find something useful in this post for your family or for one of your children even if you don’t homeschool.  Or you might be able to apply ideas to other areas of your parenting life like homework or chores. The way that I decided to start out our homeschooling journey was to use the Add On Method.  I wanted to add on one subject a week to our schedule as to get a grip slowly and  to create enduring habits.  I also wanted time to research each subject and work out the kinks that were sure to come.  I knew I wouldn’t get overwhelmed if I were only facing one new…

Watermelon Popsicle

I am continuing on this health journey, although if you saw my grocery cart yesterday you wouldn’t believe it. Boxed cake mixes, sugar cereal, and Dad’s rootbeer just to mention a few of the unmentionables. I blame Father’s Day and Girls Camp. But on most days I try. I really do. Like with my summer frozen treats —…

What’s Lunch Without a Sandwich?

Remember I am trying to make small healthy improvements to our 5 standard lunches. I improved our pizza here and our mac and cheese here, and the next lunch to healthify was the basic sandwich. I mean what’s a lunch menu without a sandwich?…
